Skincare for Hard Times
Life is hard. Skincare shouldn’t be.
This year, I tore my ACL and fractured my tibia while skiing. I had to undergo reconstruction surgery. After six months of recovery, I recently fractured the same area again, which has been a tough setback. I’ve spent a lot of time at home in bed, as just getting around the house has been really difficult. During this time, I had to adjust my skincare routine to make it manageable with my limited mobility, stability, and energy. Here are the skincare tips I have for anyone finding it hard to complete their routine:
Make it easy!
Cleansing without water. If you’re unable to stand at the sink or bathe to do a double cleanse, toner pads and hypochlorous acid mist are the next best option for cleansing the skin. Toner pads can help physically remove sweat and sebum, while hypochlorous acid can effectively reduce bad bacteria for those dealing with acne.
Make it enjoyable. At your bedside, or where ever you’re spending most of your time, keep a basket containing all of your products. Get comfy and throw on your favorite show, listen to a book or your favorite music while you do your routine. Bonus points if the basket itself is cute. If you can, choose products that you enjoy for their relaxing smell, texture, the soothing or cooling wear, or even cute packaging! If you really want to treat yourself, try keeping a gua-sha, reflexology massage tool, massage stick, or cooling massager in the basket too. Sometimes, it’s the little things that make a huge difference.
Use leave on products. No wash off steps means no scrubs or masks that need to be removed. The Dermathod Priming Peel Pads are perfect for exfoliating as they have a textured side to get some manual exfoliation to physically remove dead skin and texture, while the pad is highly saturated with an exfoliating serum that contains big molecule acids to slowly break up dead skin overnight and provide brightening benefits. For a boost of hydration, the Jelly Mask is so easy and convenient as you simply spray to apply and leave on.
Get some extra pillow cases. More time in bed, more bacteria on the pillow cases. Change them out when you can. Keep a stack of them nearby and throw a new one on every couple days.
Nourishment. Try getting more anti-inflammatory foods and drinks in you to get a helpful boost from the inside out. Staying hydrated, getting prebiotics and probiotics, and having a well rounded diet can help improve skin health as well.
Be kind to yourself. If you find yourself reading this, skin health may be the least of your worries right now. Be proud of yourself when you can, but never stress over taking time off of your routine. Break outs are not forever, but your relationship with yourself is. Have patience and give yourself grace while your energy is low and your plate is full.
Never underestimate the power of the feeling of a fresh face on a bad day! If you’re reading this while going through a difficult time, I hope things turn around for you soon and that you find some comfort and enjoyment in the little luxuries.
